Retired & Washed-Out Service Dog Adoption Agreement
For retired and washed-out service dog prospects placed as companions at a heavily discounted rate — with a clear agreement that this dog will not be worked as a service dog.
First Right of Refusal — Read Before You Sign
Trouble Off Your Hands K9 holds the first right of refusal on every dog placed under this agreement. If you can no longer keep this dog, it comes back to us — it may not be sold, given away, or transferred to anyone else.
If you sell, resell, trade, or transfer this dog without our written consent, you agree to pay a $10,000.00 fine, plus all of our court costs and legal fees to recover the dog, and to return the dog to our care. Paying the fine does not let you keep the dog.
A lifelong companion home
This dog is being adopted as a pet and family companion only — a lifelong home, not a working placement.
No service dog work
The adopter agrees not to work, train, use, or represent this dog as a service dog, service dog prospect, or assistance animal of any kind.
Discounted adoption rate
The adoption fee is heavily discounted specifically because this dog is being placed as a companion and will not be worked. The discount is consideration for that agreement.
First right of refusal
If the adopter can no longer keep the dog, it comes back to us first. The dog may never be sold, rehomed, or transferred to a third party without our written consent.
No resale — $10,000 fine
If the adopter sells or transfers the dog in violation of this agreement, they pay a $10,000 fine plus all of our court costs and legal fees to get the dog back into our care.
Read, Agree & Sign
This agreement is required for every retired service dog adoption. Please complete each section and check every acknowledgement before signing.
Why These Terms Matter
These dogs were started or evaluated as service dog prospects. When one retires from service work or washes out of the program, we place it as a companion at a heavily reduced rate so it can live out its life in a loving home — not to be put back to work. The no-service-work terms, the first right of refusal, and the no-resale terms are what make that discounted placement possible, and they protect the dog from being sold on or misrepresented.
If you have questions about what this agreement means for your adoption, reach out before you sign. We are happy to walk through it with you.
