Foster to Adopt

Take a dog into your home as a foster with the option to adopt after three months. This agreement covers the foster period, your responsibility for the dog, and how adoption works.

3-month commitment

You commit to fostering for a minimum of three (3) months before you may officially adopt the dog.

You are liable for the dog

During the foster period you are fully responsible for the dog's health, care, and any harm or damage it causes.

Fee may or may not apply

An adoption fee may or may not apply, depending on the case. Neglect cases you are helping rehabilitate have the fee waived.

Adoption contract still required

To officially adopt, you must sign our separate adoption contract. This form does not transfer ownership.

Foster & Dog Information

Why You Are Taking In This Dog

Tell us the situation behind this dog and why you are fostering. This helps us support you properly and determines how the adoption fee is handled.

Adoption Fee — Determined By Case

There may or may not be an adoption fee, and it is decided based on the individual case. There is no adoption fee if you are fostering a neglect case you are helping rehabilitate. Any fee will be confirmed in writing with you before the adoption is completed.

Note: This form does not set or collect an adoption fee. If you officially adopt after the three-month foster period, the fee — if any — will be stated in your adoption contract at that time.

Required Before Fostering Begins

Upload a clear photo of your government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport). The name must match the foster name on this form.

Upload current photos of the yard and outdoor area where the dog will be kept, including fencing, gates, and any areas the dog will have access to. These photos let us confirm the space is secure and help us support you if the dog ever goes missing.

Optional, but helpful — the area where the dog will sleep, be crated, and spend time.

Foster Terms

Please read each term carefully. These terms protect both you and the dog.

  • Three-month minimum. You commit to fostering this dog for at least three (3) months before you may officially adopt. If you wish to adopt sooner, that is at our sole discretion.
  • We remain the owner. Trouble Off Your Hands K9 retains ownership of the dog throughout the foster period. Fostering does not create any ownership interest, and you may not claim the dog as your own until an adoption contract is signed and completed.
  • You are responsible for the dog's health. You accept full responsibility for the dog's health, care, and condition during the foster period. We are not liable for the dog's health, any illness, injury, or death during that time.
  • Veterinary care and costs. You are responsible for routine and emergency veterinary costs unless we have agreed in writing to cover a specific expense in advance. We will not reimburse costs we did not approve beforehand.
  • You are liable for damage the dog causes. You accept full liability for any injury or damage the dog causes to any person, animal, or property while in your care.
  • Return on request. We may require the dog's return at any time if we believe the dog is not being properly cared for or is unsafe. You agree to return the dog promptly and without dispute.
  • Failure to communicate in a responding manner, refusal to return the dog. You agree to respond to our communications during the foster period. If you fail to respond to our attempts to contact you, ignore repeated communications, refuse to return the dog, or fail to return the dog when we ask, you agree to pay Trouble Off Your Hands K9 a reclaim fee of $2,000.00, plus all of our court costs and legal fees incurred in locating and reclaiming the dog. The dog remains our property, and we may reclaim the dog from you at any time. This fee does not give you any right to keep the dog.
  • Unauthorized retention or transfer. If you keep the dog past the agreed foster period without our written approval, or transfer the dog to anyone else, the $2,000.00 reclaim fee and all court costs and legal fees also apply, in addition to any other remedy available to us.
  • No transfer. You may not sell, give away, rehome, or transfer the dog to anyone else. If you can no longer foster, contact us immediately and return the dog to us.
  • Adoption requires a separate contract. To officially adopt, you must sign our adoption contract, at which point any applicable adoption fee is confirmed. Ownership transfers only when that contract is completed.
  • We are here to support you. If you have any concerns, questions, or problems during the foster, reach out to us. We would much rather help you work through something than have you struggle alone or make a decision we were not part of.

We Are Here to Support You

Fostering a dog — especially one coming out of a neglect situation — is not something you should have to figure out alone. If you have questions about care, behavior, health, or anything else, reach out. We would rather hear from you early than have a problem grow.

If at any point you feel you can no longer foster the dog, contact us right away. Returning the dog to us is always an option, and it is far better than the dog ending up somewhere we do not know about.
